This script converts a panoramic image into a 3D cylinder that can be used as a background in a 3D composition.

pt_Panorama was used in this Lexus Toyota Hybrid Drive Commercial:

Link to the 3-part tutorial that shows how this commercial was made including how it used pt_Panorama

How to use:

1. Drop a panoramic image (such as a cylindrical render from Stitcher Express or any panoramic image) into your main comp and select it. A test image maximus.jpg is included with the script if you want to try it out.

2. Run pt_Panorama and you’ll see you have some options:

Panorama Angle: If you have a full panorama leave this at 360. Maximus.jpg is only a 180 degree panorama, so in that case you’d set it to 180 to generate a half cyclinder.

Number Of Sides: A value between 10-20 should be fine for this. More sides means longer render times.

Side Overlap: The sides overlap outside the cylinder to prevent gaps when Motion Blur is on and the camera is moving fast. You can leave this at its default value unless you intend to see the cylinder from the outside, in which case set the value to 10. Or set the value to 500 and view the outside of the cylinder for a cool effect!

3. Click Apply and the 3D panorama will be generated and placed in a precomp. The layer is scaled to 10000% in order to simulate a distant background.

If you switch to a Custom View you may not see the cylinder as it is so big. Select the layer and choose View > Look At Selected Layers to reveal it. In Top View you’ll see a wireframe line that represents the cylinder’s center and diameter.

Video Copilot used pt_Panorama in this Oval Office Demo

Version History:

2.3 – Added CS5 compatibility – 05/2010

2.2 – 08/2009

Uses new technique that avoids possible AE 3D render engine glitches when using large image files in previous versions. (An alternate mode is provided too… just in case).

Now works correctly with non square pixel aspect ratios.

The seam where the two sides of the 360 panorama meet now aligns correctly.

Creates a new camera if there isn’t one already.

2.1 Initial release on aescripts.com 08/2009

Instantly turn layered Photoshop or Illustrator files into 3D multiplanes.

Use this script to instantly turn layered Photoshop or Illustrator files into 3D multiplanes. pt_Multiplane adds expressions that let you freely move layers on the z axis without changing the look of the shot from the original camera position, making it easy to experiment with depth in your scene.

HOW TO USE:

Import a layered Photoshop or Illustrator file using the ‘Composition – Cropped Layers’ option. A sample file ‘Miyajima.psd’ is included with this script.

Open the imported comp, run the script and click Apply Multiplane. Markers are added to identify the layers with multiplane expressions.

Change the comp view to ’2 Views – Horizontal’. Set one view to Active Camera and the other to Custom View 1 to see how the layers have been arranged in 3D space.

Move layers nearer or further away by dragging the blue z-axis arrows in the comp window. Or select layers in the Timeline and press P to view the position values, then scrub the Z values from there. The view from the original camera position will not change.

Animate the camera position and preview the result. Continue adjusting the depth of the layers as necessary.

You can also use pt_Multiplane with other types of layers, such as text and shape layers.

PLEASE NOTE This script is intended for use on layers before any transforms, parenting or keyframes are applied. It may cause these layers to shift position.

The download includes 2 different scripts. One is compatible with AE 6.5 and AE 7 and the other is compatible with CS3 and above.

Shift Selected Layers:

Shifts all selected layers in time by the same amount. You can shift by a fixed amount of time, or have the first in-point/last-out point of the selected layers jump to the current time marker.

Stagger Selected Layers:

Staggers selected layers in time, offsetting each layer by a fixed amount of frames or seconds. Layers can be staggered starting from the current time marker, or the offset can be added to each layer’s current time. Layers are sequenced in the order that you select them, so be aware of this when you’re shift-selecting groups of layers.

This script is useful if you need to embed subtitles onto video for web or tape delivery. You can import subtitles into After Effects using the same Text Script format use by Adobe Encore, then render with an alpha and import into your editing software, or use Dynamic Link to import directly into Premiere Pro.

HOW TO USE:

Create a new composition with the correct format for your output.

Subtitles are created using the settings in the Character/Paragraph panels, so create a sample text layer first and change the font, size and alignment as required. For example, you may want the text alignment in the Paragraph panel set to “Center Text”. You can then delete the text layer.

Run the script, click Import Subtitles and choose your Text Script text file to import.

To change the text size or style after import, select the imported text layer and change the settings in the Character/Paragraph panels as required. Then delete the subtitle layer and use the script to import it again.

Drag the subtitle layer to the bottom of the comp, using the Title Safe comp guides if necessary.

Then you have the option to:

Render the with an alpha channel, import into your editing software and put the subtitles onto your video.

Import the video into After Effects and place under the subtitle layer, then render the result.

With Premiere Pro you just need to save your AE project, then you can drag the subtitle comp from AE’s project panel directly into Premiere Pro’s project panel, and from there, into the edit.

HOW TO USE:

Click the Search button to see a list of all text layers in your project, or use the search options to find specific layers based on the text contents, font name or layer comments.

Select a text layer from the list, change the text or text style properties and see the results update instantly in your project.

Create your own text style presets. Use the check boxes to choose which text or style properties you want to edit or save as a preset.

Use the Turn On / Off buttons to turn selected layers on or off. Use the Refresh button to update the list after using Undo or changing text layers manually. Return to the search tab and do a new search to see any newly created text layers.

To copy text style properties between layers, uncheck Auto Fetch, select the layer you want to copy and hit Fetch, then select the layers you want to change and hit Apply.

Uncheck Auto Apply and use the Apply button instead if you’re trying to edit many layers at the same time, or if you don’t want each keystroke to be counted as a separate Undo.
