We used Variable Diffusion (VDf) to combine any of our cg elements/environments with our practical plates.
We actually shot a bunch of practical “background/plate" material — the MC Escher labyrinth was a practical miniature that had practical lights coming out of those archways and doorways. The building she’s running on for the most part is also a real set of building flats we built out, to later combine with a CG skyscraper.
We shot Lindsey on a blue-screen on wirework in order to get any flying effects, and then built to-scale archways and doorways to later match up with the miniature labyrinth. VDf came in to play every time we had a practical light in the miniature shoot that we needed to bloom from the background INTO Lindsey’s keyed plate (i.e. blooming from a light behind her, and making it bloom over her face like a real camera filter would).
VDf also majorly came in handy whenever we wanted to bloom out and haze up the speculars in a CG environment like the skyscraper world — where even after render/lighting/texturing, since the CG world needed to look like we shot the world with a Black Pro Mist, VDf came in and added amazing atmosphere and lighting enhancements and aesthetic, and very accurately and quickly as well.
