Looking for a shortcut key in After Effects? Well how about having access to a list of over 600+ shortcut keys without leaving the After Effects environment? Shortcut Key Reference v2 to the rescue. Give yourself an added advantage by learning shortcut keys for most of your everyday tasks. You’re a veteran AE user? Well it doesn’t hurt to have a quick reminder of a valuable shortcut key that maybe you didn’t use enough to memorize. I’ve been using AE for eleven years now myself and I am always finding new shortcut keys I didn’t realize were there.
Shortcut_Key_Reference_v2 is compatible with CS3, CS4, CS5 and CS5.5. It includes both the Dropdown List and Listbox versions from the 2007 release, in one script. You can easily toggle which version you would like to view just by clicking a button. With the Listbox version, you can find shortcuts faster by typing in the search field.
Tip:
If the Shortcut file is incorrect and you need to re-choose the file, just click the “?” to bring up the help popup and click  the “Select Shortcut File” button. This will allow you to choose the file again without relaunching the script.
Known issues:
- CS5 & CS5.5 Dropdown list menus are limited by the size of the script panel boundaries (see images below). So having a narrow panel height when script is docked, may limit the amount of items you are able to view at once. This is an After Effects program limitation beyond my control. CS3 and CS4 does not have this issue.

  • I need to download a fresh copy. I used the wrong data. My copy will not let me change the app data incorrectly installed. I used my copies but they will not work. Thank you.
    ‘WARNING:
Your “Adobe After Effects 10.0 Shortcuts” file seems to be missing. It is normally located here…
    PC: C\Documents and Settings\”username”\Application Data\Adobe\After Effects\10.0′
Figured it out. But you may want to add to this error message for Win 7 users. The path is:
    C:\Users\”username”\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\10.0

  • nice job man. this is a really, really good idea. thanks for knocking out out.

  • Suggestion for this script. Is it possible to increase the font size with preferences? Does not look like it is possible but would be great capability for old eyes!

  • Just purchased your script. Looking forward to having this handy tool. I tried to find a way to enable in ft-Toolbar but could not see the file. I searched the UI Script folder where it is located but since I am using Windows 7, I followed this path: C:\Users\

    • Hi David, hmmmm, I never tried running this script though ft-toolbar. My first guess is that since ShortcutKeyReference(SKR) is meant to be a dockable or floating panel that this may interfere with ft-toolbar’s setup, but not sure. I’ll look into this further and see if I can find an answer for you.

  • I am not sure I understand how to install this, all I got when I looked in the zip was a .bin file and readme. Installed it into the scripts ui folder and it would not work. Windows 7 64 bit.

  • Hello David,
    Great Script!

I was wondering if you could do (use) part of this script, to modificate the SCRIPT LAUNCHER UI.

I have like 50 scripts in AE, but i almost never use them couse it takes longer to find the scritp, than to make the action in the old fashion way.

So, my idea is to add a search bar in the UI of the launcher, just like you did in this script.

Hope you could do this, and please let me know!

    Greetings from Argentina

  • Hi David, i have a PC win 7, 64bit running cs5.5. I pointed a script to C:\Users\******username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\10.5

    to a file called
    Adobe After Effects 10.5 Shortcuts.txt

but it gives me Error: aeskr -m01 Something went wrong. Error at line #252
    IOError: Bad argument
    - File or folder does not exist

Do you have an idea what should it be?

  • Thank you david. Even though it’s basic it will still be useful.
    Many thanks :)

  • Was there ever a (mac) CS3 version of this script? It would be very useful…

    • Yes DW, the original version 1.0 was created back in 2008 for CS3 before I was a contributor for AEScripts. It was a lot more basic though, it simply just listed the text and that was it. It still resides on Adobe’s “After Effects Exchange” site. If you search online for “Shortcut Key Reference – Dropdown version After Effects Exchange” it’ll pop right up in the results.

    • Just to let you know, I was able to get this current version (2.2) of the script CS3 compatible now. :) No need for the old one anymore.

  • Adobe After Effects 10.0 Tastaturbefehle

    the same folder

  • hi David,

i like to use your script on a mac but the script don`t find the right file.
I use a german language – it that the problem ? the file`s name is german ?

    • Sorry Connor, the script is English only at the moment. If you can post the German translation of the shortcut file name and folder path, I can take a look at trying to localize the script for Germany.

  • How about making one for simple key words for AE expression scripts by using Key Reference they way we can Copy and Paste them in.

Example I need a simple E.S. for camera movement jump (up, down, left, right)
I’ll pick the “up” and “down” script functions then copy script into it parameter.

How hard would be to make something in that area?

  • Hi David,

on windows vista 64, with CS5 production premium, I have probleme to locate

  • I tried out the script and although I think it is great I lack the ability to find a specific shortcut by typing it. For instance what does cmd+ctrl+ – do, and have that displayed.

    • I may try to figure out a way to do a reverse lookup style search in the future. Certain characters like the plus sign, and minus sign were not allowed because they were throwing errors in various combinations, even when converting them to strings for the search function. I did look up the shortcut you mentioned and “cmd+ctrl+

  • Same problem on windows 7.

    • Are you using 64bit Windows 7 as well Dellium, or standard 32bit? Just curious as my PC testing environment is on 64bit Win 7, but through Parallels on Mac. Didn’t know if 32bit version has a different path as well.

  • Having an issue in CS5 (64-bit) Windows 7, where I am getting an error message:

    ‘WARNING:
Your “Adobe After Effects 10.0 Shortcuts” file seems to be missing. It is normally located here…
    PC: C\Documents and Settings\”username”\Application Data\Adobe\After Effects\10.0′

Figured it out. But you may want to add to this error message for Win 7 users. The path is:

    C:\Users\”username”\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\10.0

    Otherwise, GREAT script. Thanks.
    Ed
