Analog FX Lab

Analog FX Lab is a GPU-accelerated Cavalry filter for realistic VHS signal processing and CRT display emulation. It combines the soft color response, tape instability, and noise of analog video with the scanlines, phosphor structure, curvature, and bloom of a CRT display. The VHS and CRT sections work independently, so Analog FX Lab can be used for a clean display treatment, a degraded tape look, or a complete VHS-to-CRT signal chain.

Description

Main Features

Independent VHS and CRT Engines

Enable VHS, CRT, or both inside one Filter. When combined, the image passes through the VHS section first and the CRT section second, recreating the practical flow of a tape signal displayed on a CRT.

VHS Amount and CRT Amount scale the overall strength of each section, making it easy to move from subtle signal texture to a more pronounced analog treatment without rebuilding the effect.

VHS Signal Processing

Analog FX Lab separates luminance and chrominance behavior instead of relying on a generic RGB split. The result includes directional chroma bleed, luma softness, restrained color degradation, multi-scale tape noise, horizontal time-base instability, and head-switching noise.

The VHS section includes:

  • Time-Based Jitter for animated horizontal tape instability
  • Chroma Bleed for the softer, horizontally spread color response associated with recorded video
  • Luma Softness for reducing sharp luminance detail independently of the color treatment
  • Tape Noise, Tape Noise Size, and Tape Noise Color for controlling the amount, scale, and chroma variation of the animated noise
  • Head Switching Noise for restrained lower-frame distortion
  • Color Degradation for reducing color fidelity and introducing a worn-tape response

These controls can create an identifiable VHS character without depending on extreme glitches or a simple red-and-blue channel offset.

CRT Display Simulation

The CRT section adds curved-screen geometry, overscan, scanlines, an RGB aperture grille, brightness compensation, adjustable black level, compact phosphor bloom, vignette, and animated rolling distortion.

Use Curvature and Overscan to shape the display, then control its visible structure with Scanlines, Scanline Spacing, and Scanline Softness. Aperture Grille and Aperture Grille Scale add an RGB phosphor pattern that can range from fine display texture to a more graphic close-up treatment.

Brightness Compensation restores light reduced by the display pattern, while Black Level can lift dark areas enough to reveal the CRT texture. CRT Bloom adds a compact glow around bright display detail, CRT Vignette darkens the screen edges, and Rolling Distortion introduces an animated horizontal sync band.

Resolution-Aware Display Detail

Enable Use CRT Resolution to sample the source at the simulated display resolution. Edges and fine detail then conform to the scanline and grille structure instead of remaining perfectly sharp beneath an overlay. This helps the source image and the display pattern read as one CRT image rather than as two unrelated layers.

Automatic Motion

Jitter, tape noise, and rolling distortion connect to the current composition frame automatically, so the animated analog behavior works without manual keyframing. Time - Jitter, Time - Noise, and Time - CRT remain available for independent expressions, offsets, or custom timing.

Automatic motion via three Time entries that connect to your project's current frame

Reliable Edge Handling

Auto, Clamp, and Transparent edge modes support both isolated layers and full-frame compositions:

  • Use Auto or Transparent for isolated, individual layers when displaced color and blur should extend naturally beyond the alpha edge.
  • Use Clamp for full-frame footage, pre-compositions, and backgrounds for optimal displacement and blur.

The Filter also expands its working bounds to preserve displaced, blurred, and curved detail around isolated layers.

Typical Uses

  • VHS playback and tape-transfer looks
  • CRT monitors, televisions, terminals, and title cards
  • Retro broadcast graphics and analog interfaces
  • Music videos, lyric videos, and motion-design treatments
  • Archival, found-footage, and surveillance styling
  • Screen inserts and close-up phosphor texture
  • Subtle signal texture on otherwise clean artwork
  • Combined VHS-to-CRT treatments inside one Filter
