With built-in DaVinci Resolve tools, captions are limited in style and have no animation options – which means videos can sometimes feel static and miss the dynamic edge of social media. Caption Cat transforms captions with animated and customizable designs, ensuring your captions look as professional and unique as your content.

Key Features

  • In-App Captioning: Fully integrated into DaVinci Resolve, there’s no need to jump between applications or upload files to third-party services.
  • AI-Powered Speech-to-Text: Built-in transcription with support for 112 languages.
  • Animated Caption Presets: Choose from an array of caption styles to bring your videos to life.
  • Social Media Safe Zones: Visual overlays in the viewer to help you avoid UI element overlaps.
  • Customization & Reusable Presets: Save your unique designs for consistent branding across your videos.
  • No Subscriptions: A single purchase gives you a permanent license to Caption Cat.

The Workflow

Caption Cat simplifies captioning in DaVinci Resolve with a straightforward, three-step workflow:

workflowStep1

Start by creating a subtitle track with caption text. You can use DaVinci Resolve Studio’s built-in transcription feature (accessible via the main menu at Timeline → Create Subtitles from Audio) for seamless integration. Alternatively, Caption Cat’s AI-powered transcription provides another quick and efficient option for generating subtitles. Of course, you can also create subtitle tracks through other methods, such as importing SRT files from external tools, ensuring flexibility to fit into any workflow.

Which Transcription Method Should You Use?

When deciding between transcription methods, it depends on your specific needs:

  • Resolve’s Built-In Transcription: If you’re working with English, DaVinci Resolve Studio’s built-in transcription is an excellent choice. It’s both fast and highly accurate for English content.
  • Caption Cat’s Transcription: For non-English languages or when working in multilingual contexts, Caption Cat is often the better option. It supports 112 languages and is powered by OpenAI’s Whisper, renowned for its advanced speech-to-text accuracy across various languages. On Windows systems with CUDA support, Caption Cat’s transcription is also fast. However, on Mac systems, it is significantly slower than Resolve’s built-in transcription.
workflowStep2

Next, browse Caption Cat’s library of stylish, customizable presets and simply drag your choice onto a video track in your timeline. Caption Cat offers templates designed for both Landscape and Vertical & Square formats, ensuring your captions look great on any platform. Since Caption Cat’s presets function as regular DaVinci Resolve title templates, they’re easy to preview, apply, and adjust—no new learning curve required if you’re familiar with Resolve’s titles. You can customize everything from animations to colors, fonts, and more, allowing you to match your captions seamlessly with your brand or creative style.

workflowStep3

Once your subtitle track and preset are ready, simply click Caption Cat’s “Apply Subtitles” button. Caption Cat will automatically match and apply the subtitle text from your subtitle track to the preset on the video track, creating synchronized, animated captions that fit seamlessly with your video content.

Social Media Safe Zones

safezonepreview

Caption Cat includes a powerful feature that overlays social media safe zones directly in the DaVinci Resolve viewer. This allows you to see exactly where your captions might overlap with UI elements (like buttons or logos) of social media apps. With this visual guide, you can easily adjust your caption placement to ensure they stay within the optimal areas, preventing interference with essential on-screen elements and improving your video's readability on different platforms.

Speak to the World with 112 Languages – And Translate Instantly to English

Our powerful speech-to-text feature supports transcription in 112 languages. Plus, if you want to reach English-speaking viewers, Caption Cat can automatically translate your captions into English – no extra software or steps required!

Resolve Free vs. Studio: Caption Cat Compatibility

Caption Cat is officially supported only in the Studio version of Resolve.

This decision is due to changes introduced in DaVinci Resolve 19.1 (released in November 2024), where Blackmagic Design implemented limitations in the Free version that prevent the execution of scripts like Caption Cat. While the tool may still work with the Free version of Resolve 19.0.3 or earlier, this is not guaranteed and should be considered experimental.

If you'd like to experiment with Caption Cat on Resolve Free, you can download version 19.0.3 or earlier here. (In the "Latest Downloads" section, scroll down until you find version 19.0.3.)
