How to use

Open the panel via Window > Extensions > Colorama Browser

The panel is resizable, dockable and scrollable.

To apply a preset to your layer just double-click the preset. Or single-click, then click the Apply button. This will add a Colorama effect to your layer, with the chosen gradient as the Output Cycle. The free trial version is limited to the built-in presets and the first seven presets in each of the other categories.

Note: If you're not familiar with how to use the Colorama effect itself, see the full documentation at After Effects Help - Colorama

If you already have a Colorama effect on your layer

The two radio buttons at the bottom of the panel control what happens if you already have a Colorama effect on your layer. If you don't want to add multiple Colorama effects on the layer, leave it set to "Apply to existing". But if you want to add two or more Colorama effects to the same layer, then switch it to "Add new unless Colorama is selected", which will cause it add a new instance of Colorama, unless you specifically select the Colorama effect first that you want to apply the gradient to.

If you're applying a preset to an existing Colorama effect, it will only change the gradient or "Output Cycle". So if you've adjusted other Colorama settings, then all of that will be preserved, and just the gradient will been changed.

If your "Output Cycle" has keyframes, the new gradient will be applied to a new keyframe. Note: When you animate the Output Cycle, the position and color of the triangles on the Output Cycle color wheel are interpolated between keyframes. For best results, make sure that all keyframes have the same number of Output Cycle triangles. If you want to interpolate between gradients that have different numbers of triangles on their Output Cycle wheels then consider duplicating the layer and giving each copy of the layer a different gradient, then fading the layer opacities to create a smooth transition.

How to achieve subtle color-grading effects

To make the effect more subtle you can adjust other Colorama settings, especially the "Blend With Original" slider, and what will be modified in the "Modify" section. You can also try changing "Get Phase From" in the "Input Phase" section.

Color Cycles

Most of the presets in Colorama Browser are "ramps", with a light to dark gradient, however some presets are looping color cycles. Use these cyclic gradients, along with animating Colorama's "Phase Shift" (under "Input Phase") to create a looping color-cycling effect. You can also easily make any of the ramps into a cycle by dragging apart the top two gradient stops so there's a smooth blend of colors at the top of the cycle. Try increasing the "Cycle Repetitions" too. (Under "Output Cycle".)

Note

If you apply Colorama to a layer with an alpha channel, and the Output Cycle doesn’t contain alpha information, the anti-aliased edges of the layer may appear pixelated. To smooth the edges, deselect Modify Alpha.
