Quick Start Guide

Here's how to get the perfect graphic novel look with Grainny DCTL in just a few steps.

  1. Apply the DCTL: Add "NP FX Grainny" to your clip or node in DaVinci Resolve.
  2. Dial in the Core Look: The magic happens with the Posterization and Pixel Mix settings. Start here to build your base style.
  3. Fine-Tune the Details:
    • Use the Blend sliders to control the visibility of the grain and texture.
    • Use the Steps slider to control the posterization effect. (Fewer steps = a stronger, more stylized look).
  4. Colorize Your Look: The Colorize feature works best when the Posterization "Steps" are set to 5 or fewer.

🛠️ Few More Things

  • Hover for Help: Not sure what a control does? Hover your mouse over the parameter name for a helpful tooltip.
  • Why the Big Numbers? Some sliders (like Hue, which is multiplied by 100) are scaled up to arrange sliders in a user-friendly order, as DCTL UIs have limited flexibility. Just tweak until it looks good!

Version History

1.0.0 -

Nov 23, 2025

This major update introduces significant improvements and new features that leverage the latest DCTL API in DaVinci Resolve 19.1. Please review the following changes and important compatibility notice.

Key Improvements & New Features:

- Source Contour (formerly Source Edges): Renamed to better represent its new behavior. The updated algorithm delivers better computational performance and a more stylized look. You can now customize the contour color using multiple methods: the new HSV parameters to shift colors in the contour region; the new Color Picker UI elements; or by inverting the image in the contour area.

- Adjusted Default Values: Optimized starting parameters for a better out-of-the-box experience.

- Performance Optimizations: General under-the-hood improvements for a smoother user experience.

Changes Leveraging DaVinci Resolve 19.1 DCTL API

This update fully utilizes new features available from DaVinci Resolve 19.1 onwards, resulting in the following enhancements:

- Native Random Generator: Pixel Mix now uses Resolve's native random generator, which automatically re-generates on every frame for dynamic results.

- New UI Elements: Added convenient Color Pickers for intuitive color selection.

- In-UI Tooltips: Helpful tooltips have been added for parameters where the functionality may benefit from explanation. To reduce visual clutter, tooltips are not present on parameters with immediately obvious functions.

! Important Compatibility Notice

This version and all future versions require DaVinci Resolve 19.1 or later.

Due to its reliance on new DCTL development features introduced in Resolve 19.1, this plugin will not function in prior versions of DaVinci Resolve. Please ensure your application is up to date.
