Build a multipass shot in one click.
Bringing a rendered CGI shot into After Effects is a chore: hunt through the open-file dialog, import the passes, then wire up EXtractoR for every one of them by hand — then do it again for the next shot, and the next version of it. Gulp replaces the routine. Point it at a render folder, browse your shots in a panel, and build a comp with every pass on its own named layer — channel routing, blend modes, depth remapping and PuzzleMatte splitting done.
And it is not an EXR-only tool. A multipass EXR with the passes packed inside it and a folder of separate per-pass files build the same comp — EXR, DPX, TIFF, PNG, JPEG, TGA, HDR, PSD, in any mixture. Point it at the folder and hit Build.

Browse your renders, not the file dialog.
Choose a root folder once and Gulp becomes your render browser. Every row carries a thumbnail of the actual frame, image sequences collapse to a single line with their real frame range, multichannel EXRs get a multipass tag listing the passes inside, and a filter field narrows by name or extension — with negative terms to exclude what you don't want.

See the shot, not the filename.
Every row can carry a thumbnail of the actual frame — stills, image sequences and movies alike — generated in the background and cached, so a folder of SHOT_010_v004 files stops being a wall of near-identical names. Hover a sequence or a clip and run the pointer across it to scrub through the shot — Premiere Pro-like hover scrubbing, inside After Effects, without importing anything. A slider sets the size; one button switches back to plain icons.

It reads the EXR before you import it.
Gulp parses each EXR's header at browse time: which passes it contains, channel layout, bit depth (16-bit half or 32-bit float) and frame rate where the file carries one. The build dialog shows the detected colourspace and bit depth before anything is imported, so you know what you are committing to.

Depth and mattes, handled properly.
Depth passes arrive as one layer with the Z channel routed to RGB and the black/white points set from a near/far range — prefilled from the render's camera metadata where present (Redshift writes it). PuzzleMattes split into one luma-matte layer per ID, ready for track mattes; a matte baked as a single ID at render time stays as one layer instead of three duplicates.

Cryptomatte, ready to pick.
A Cryptomatte AOV comes in untouched — never extracted, never split into luma mattes — and Gulp applies After Effects' own Cryptomatte effect to the layer as it builds. Click an object in the viewer and you have its matte. And because Gulp reads the cryptomatte metadata at browse time, it can tell you before you import whether a matte will actually decode: a cryptomatte packed inside a multipass EXR has the channels but not the manifest, and After Effects answers that with "No Cryptomatte layers found". Gulp flags it in the browser instead.

It knows the render isn't finished.
A shot still coming off the farm shows a completeness bar: frames present against the expected range, updating as frames land. Split a multipass to real files on disk.
Right-click any multipass EXR and Gulp writes each pass out as its own EXR sequence, with a progress bar that names the file and the frame-by-pass count, then opens the output folder. Useful for handing a single pass to a colourist or another application. Powered by the bundled oiiotool, so every EXR compression is handled, and you choose the output compression. Every frame of every pass is counted on the way out: a split that comes up short says so — wrote 195 of 200 frames — 5 missing — rather than reporting success on an incomplete sequence.

Relink a broken project in one pass.
When renders move or get re-versioned, Gulp scans the project for missing footage, matches it against a folder you point at (search depth is yours to set) and relinks in bulk — sequences, stills and movies, including items whose type AE misdetected. Ambiguous matches get a per-item choice rather than a silent guess.

Send the comp to Premiere.
One click sends the comp you have open in the viewer to an open Premiere Pro project as a Dynamic Link comp, with the option to drop it at the playhead. It is the comp After Effects actually has open that travels — not whatever happens to be selected in the Project panel — and the button greys out when there is no comp open at all. If the AE project isn't saved yet, Gulp prompts you to save and carries on.

Quick import when you don't want a comp.
Not every job needs shot assembly. Select any footage and import it with its own dialog: frame rate, where it lands in the Project panel, layer naming, straight into the active comp if you want it there. Loose movies and stills can build a comp too, sized and timed from the footage.

Colour, stated honestly.
Gulp asks one question — what did you render to? — and everything below it changes with the answer: what your project is set to now, what this workflow needs, and which settings differ. It cannot detect this for you, because an EXR carries primaries at best and no transfer function ever, so it asks rather than guesses. For the usual answer, ACEScg, it can also patch the OCIO configs that ship with After Effects so every EXR imports as scene-linear instead of the ACES2065-1 they assume — one line each, a backup kept, undoable at any time.

An interface that fits your After Effects.
Five themes in Preferences, picked from a strip of tiles rather than a dropdown — each tile is a live render of the panel in that palette, so you choose by looking rather than by applying a theme to find out what it does. The default matches AE's own darkest interface with the standard Adobe accent, and the others range from muted dark schemes to a light option. The panel stays a panel — it does not shout at you.

- Multipass is a packed EXR. Listing the passes inside one file, the multipass tag, EXtractoR / IDentifier routing and split-to-disk all depend on EXR's channel layout. A layered PSD or multichannel TIFF imports as a single item — Gulp reads and chips them, and does not try to take them apart.

Gulp 1.1 is the shot builder — thumbnails, hover-scrub and Cryptomatte are all in the box now. Two things are still ahead, in roughly this order, no dates promised.

The easiest way to install and license is by using the aescripts + aeplugins manager. To install a trial you can select "Add Trial" from the "Account" menu.
Alternatively you can use the ZXP/UXP Installer.
The manager also places Gulp's native plugin for you. After installing, restart After Effects, then open the panel from Window ▸ Extensions ▸ Gulp.

Which After Effects versions does Gulp support?
After Effects 2022 to 2026, on Windows and macOS.
What are the system requirements?
Windows x64, or macOS on Apple Silicon or Intel — the Mac build is universal. The native plugin is Apple-notarized, so macOS raises no security prompts on first launch.
I'm on an older After Effects — does the ACES colour setup still work?
Gulp's colour reporting and guidance work on every supported version. The ACES side relies on OCIO colour management, which After Effects gained in 23.2 — so on After Effects 2022, and 23.0 / 23.1, there is no OCIO to configure. On those versions the free OpenColorIO plug-in from fnord adds it, installed and set up by hand: macOS (.dmg) · Windows (.zip) — or the current version from fnord.com. If you are on 23.2 or later you do not want it: fnord retired that plug-in precisely because After Effects made it unnecessary, and it is kept only for opening old projects.
Do I need to buy EXtractoR or IDentifier as well?
No. Both ship with After Effects, so you already have them. Gulp uses its own native plugin to set their channel selection on each layer for you — the part that is otherwise done by hand, pass by pass.
Which renderers does it work with?
Redshift, Octane, Arnold, V-Ray and Cinema 4D's own renderers — anything that writes multipass or multichannel EXRs. Gulp reads the file, not the renderer, so it is not tied to a particular one.
Does it only work with EXR?
No. Shot building takes any image sequence — a TIFF or DPX beauty with PNG passes beside it builds the same comp as an EXR one. What is EXR-only is multipass: passes packed inside a single file. Gulp reads those from the EXR header; a layered PSD or a multichannel TIFF comes in as a single item, read and chipped but not taken apart. One honest edge: a lone PNG or JPEG sequence with no passes beside it is not assumed to be a render, so it keeps its filename rather than being called "Beauty".

Does the browser show thumbnails?
Yes — stills, image sequences and movies all get a thumbnail of the actual frame, rendered in the background and cached, and you can hover a row and run the pointer across it to scrub through the shot — the same hover-scrub Premiere Pro has always had, without importing anything. A slider sets the thumbnail size and one button switches back to plain icons; both settings are remembered. Depth and matte passes are rendered so they read, rather than arriving as black tiles. Illustrator files are the one gap: they are recognised and chipped, but an .ai is a PDF container and nothing bundled with Gulp rasterises one, so those rows show no preview.

Yes. Dropbox, OneDrive and iCloud are supported. Online-only files are clearly badged, reading a header never triggers a download, and you can pull down only what you need from the browser — right-click, or click the badge. Every download prompt states the cost in GB before it acts.
Can I get individual passes out as separate files?
Yes. Yes. Gulp scans the project for missing footage, matches it against a folder you point at — to a search depth you set — and relinks in bulk: sequences, stills and movies, including items whose type After Effects misdetected. Ambiguous matches get a per-item choice rather than a silent guess.
Does it change my project's colour settings?
It reads your project's live colour state — engine, OCIO config, working space, bit depth — and walks you through an ACES setup, recommending 32bpc and an ACEScg working space for scene-linear EXRs. After Effects does not let a script change everything here, so Gulp sets what is settable and tells you plainly what to click for the rest, rather than pretending otherwise.
Does it work with Premiere Pro?

- Thumbnails in the browser. Stills, image sequences and movies, with hover-scrub to preview a sequence without importing it. Size slider in the filter row; cache size cap, live readout and a Clear button in Preferences.
- Cryptomatte support. Gulp now applies After Effects' Cryptomatte effect when it imports one, and — just as importantly — never splits a cryptomatte, because splitting is the one thing that breaks it. A green chip tells you a cryptomatte will work; an amber one warns when it won't, and says why (a packed cryptomatte has no manifest, so no name can ever resolve).
- Redshift shadow-stack pre-comp. Build can now assemble the Diffuse Filter + Shadows pair into the documented recipe as a pre-comp, rather than leaving you to wire it by hand.
- Colour, answered rather than guessed. Gulp identifies the renderer from the EXR header and states the footage colourspace outright when it can prove it. The Colour pane has been reworked, and Preferences now uses a category sidebar in the shape After Effects' own Preferences uses.
- ACES 1.2 configs can take per-file-type rules. Gulp can patch an ACES 1.2 OCIO config up to OCIO v2 in place, which is what makes per-format rules possible. Shown as OCIO v1 → OCIO v2 once patched. After Effects must be restarted afterwards.
- Format detection. .c4d files, PSD and TIFF layer chips (with layer counts, blend modes and compression), Illustrator chips, and Blender renders are now identified correctly.
Faster
- EXR splitting is roughly twice as fast. Gulp reads the multipass file once and writes every pass from that single decode, instead of re-reading it once per pass.
- Hardware video decode on both Windows and macOS (for thumbnails previews), with an automatic software fallback that tells you once if it happens.
- AV1 movies decode on macOS.
Fixed
- An EXR split to disk could silently drop frames. A long sequence could finish with frames missing from some passes and still report success. Gulp now counts every frame of every pass and refuses to call a short split successful, naming how many landed.
- A long split no longer takes the panel over. Progress moved to a bar; the file list stays visible and you can keep importing and building while it runs. Large jobs warn up front, and say to pause cloud syncing if the footage is in a synced folder.
- Light groups sum again, and beauty variants are no longer summed onto the beauty.
- Depth (Z) passes preview properly in thumbnails instead of rendering black.
- Depth near/far is only offered when it will be used — on import, it's hidden unless the pass is being added to a comp.
- "Send current comp to Premiere" is disabled until a comp is actually open, and sends the comp open in the viewer rather than whatever is selected in the Project panel.
- Stills are recognised as a buildable shot; the build scope no longer duplicates passes.
- An option to silence After Effects' missing-frames dialog in favour of Gulp's own reporting.

The archival copy must be on a storage medium other than a hard drive, and may only be used for the reinstallation of the Software Product. This Agreement does not permit the installation or use of multiple copies of the Software Product, or the installation of the Software Product on more than one computer at any given time, on a system that allows shared used of applications, on a multi-user network, or on any configuration or system of computers that allows multiple users. Multiple copy use or installation is only allowed if you obtain an appropriate licensing agreement for each user and each copy of the Software Product.
Restrictions on Transfer
Without first obtaining the express written consent of the author, you may not assign your rights and obligations under this Agreement, or redistribute, encumber, sell, rent, lease, sublicense, or otherwise transfer your rights to the Software Product.
Restrictions on Use
You may not use, copy, or install the Software Product on any system with more than one computer, or permit the use, copying, or installation of the Software Product by more than one user or on more than one computer. If you hold multiple, validly licensed copies, you may not use, copy, or install the Software Product on any system with more than the number of computers permitted by license, or permit the use, copying, or installation by more users, or on more computers than the number permitted by license.
You may not decompile, "reverse-engineer", disassemble, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code for the Software Product.
Restrictions on Alteration
You may not modify the Software Product or create any derivative work of the Software Product or its accompanying documentation. Derivative works include but are not limited to translations. You may not alter any files or libraries in any portion of the Software Product.
Restrictions on Copying
You may not copy any part of the Software Product except to the extent that licensed use inherently demands the creation of a temporary copy stored in computer memory and not permanently affixed on storage medium. You may make one archival copy which must be stored on a medium other than a computer hard drive.
Disclaimer of Warranties and Limitation of Liability
UNLESS OTHERWISE EXPLICITLY AGREED TO IN WRITING BY THE AUTHOR, THE AUTHOR MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, IN FACT OR IN LAW, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OTHER THAN AS SET FORTH IN THIS AGREEMENT OR IN THE LIMITED WARRANTY DOCUMENTS PROVIDED WITH THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT.
The author makes no warranty that the Software Product will meet your requirements or operate under your specific conditions of use. The author makes no warranty that operation of the Software Product will be secure, error free, or free from interruption. YOU MUST DETERMINE WHETHER THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT SUFFICIENTLY MEETS YOUR REQUIREMENTS FOR SECURITY AND UNINTERRUPTABILITY. YOU BEAR SOLE RESPONSIBILITY AND ALL LIABILITY FOR ANY LOSS INCURRED DUE TO FAILURE OF THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT TO MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS. THE AUTHOR WILL NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, BE RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR THE LOSS OF DATA ON ANY COMPUTER OR INFORMATION STORAGE DEVICE.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL THE AUTHOR, ITS DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES OR AGENTS BE LIABLE TO YOU OR ANY OTHER PARTY FOR INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES OF ANY KIND INCLUDING LOST REVENUES OR PROFITS OR LOSS OF BUSINESS) RESULTING FROM THIS AGREEMENT, OR FROM THE FURNISHING, PERFORMANCE, INSTALLATION, OR USE OF THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT, WHETHER DUE TO A BREACH OF CONTRACT, BREACH OF WARRANTY, OR THE NEGLIGENCE OF THE AUTHOR OR ANY OTHER PARTY, EVEN IF THE AUTHOR IS ADVISED BEFOREHAND OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. TO THE EXTENT THAT THE APPLICABLE JURISDICTION LIMITS THE AUTHOR'S ABILITY TO DISCLAIM ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES, THIS DISCLAIMER SHALL BE EFFECTIVE TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED.
Limitation of Remedies and Damages
Any claim must be made within the applicable warranty period. All warranties cover only defects arising under normal use and do not include malfunctions or failure resulting from misuse, abuse, neglect, alteration, problems with electrical power, acts of nature, unusual temperatures or humidity, improper installation, or damage determined by the author to have been caused by you. All limited warranties on the Software Product are granted only to you and are non-transferable. You agree to indemnify and hold the author harmless from all claims, judgments, liabilities, expenses, or costs arising from your breach of this Agreement and/or acts or omissions.
Governing Law, Jurisdiction and Costs
This Agreement is governed by the laws of New York, without regard to New York's conflict or choice of law provisions.
Severability
If any provision of this Agreement shall be held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remainder of this Agreement shall remain in full force and effect. To the extent any express or implied restrictions are not permitted by applicable laws, these express or implied restrictions shall remain in force and effect to the maximum extent permitted by such applicable laws.
