Mistake Detector checks your sequence or composition for mistakes before you export.
Click Scan. It reads the open project, not an export, and lists the things that get noticed after delivery: an offline clip still sitting in the timeline, a black gap where a clip slipped, a muted track with audio on it, a one-frame sliver left at a cut, a typo in a lower third. Every finding carries a timestamp. Click it and the playhead goes there.
It is built for editors and motion designers who send work to clients. It is not a cleanup tool and it never edits your project. It answers one question before you export: what is broken?
Click Scan, fix your mistakes.
Premiere Pro scans the active sequence in seconds and lists every problem with a timestamp: offline media, black gaps, muted tracks carrying clips, flash slivers, exposed frames, typos in graphics text. Click a finding and the playhead jumps to it.
Add markers.
One click drops a red marker on every finding, named by the check, so the list lives on the timeline itself.
Remove markers clears only the ones Mistake Detector wrote. Your own markers are never touched.
Turn off what you don't want.
Every check has a switch. Cutting a silent montage? Turn off the audio checks. Something deliberate keeps coming up? Dismiss it once and it stays out of the list on later scans of that sequence or comp.
Install. Scan. Fix.
- Install the panel. One install adds Mistake Detector to both Premiere Pro (Window › Extensions) and After Effects. There is nothing to configure.
- Click Scan. Premiere Pro scans the active sequence; After Effects scans the active comp and every precomp inside it. A scan takes seconds.
- Fix what it finds. Click a finding to jump to it. Dismiss anything that is intentional. Re-scan until the list is empty.
What it checks in Premiere Pro
- Offline media — a clip in your timeline whose file Premiere cannot find. Reported once per missing file, however many times it is placed.
- Black gaps — a hole in the program output, checked across every video track at once. A gap on V2 with picture underneath on V1 is not a finding; a gap with nothing beneath it is.
- Muted tracks carrying clips — an audio track that is muted but still has clips on it. Empty muted tracks are ignored.
- Exposed frames — a clip that does not fill the frame with nothing on the tracks beneath it: black borders around the picture.
- Flash slivers — clips of three frames or fewer at the sequence frame rate, the razor-stub class of accidental flash at a cut point.
- Typos in graphics text — a spell check on the text inside your Essential Graphics titles and lower thirds.
What it checks in After Effects
- Missing footage — anything After Effects reports as missing, caught before it renders as colour bars.
- Broken expressions — expressions After Effects has flagged with an error, so the property no longer animates.
- Typos in text layers — a spell check on the text of every text layer in the comp tree.
- Black borders — a layer stack that does not fill the comp. Layer geometry finds the candidates; the rendered frame confirms them, so a mask or effect does not produce a false alarm.
Markers, playhead, dismissals
- Add markers drops a timeline marker on every finding in Premiere Pro, named by the check (Offline media, Black gap, Muted audio, Exposed frame, Flash sliver, Graphics text). Markers are standard Premiere markers and stay useful without the panel open.
- Remove markers clears only the markers Mistake Detector wrote. Your own markers are never touched, even at the same timecode.
- Click a timestamp to move the playhead there. In After Effects, click a finding to open the comp it belongs to, and for black borders, jump to the frame.
- Dismiss a finding that is deliberate and it stays out of the list on later scans of that sequence or comp (typo dismissals last for the session).
- Filter the checks you want. Turn off the ones that do not apply to the job.
Honest by design
- Every check reads the host application's own state or measures the project directly. No AI judgement, no opinions.
- Your project never leaves your machine. Scans run locally inside Premiere Pro and After Effects.
- Findings that could be deliberate are labelled as warnings and are dismissible. Findings that guarantee a broken export (offline media, black gaps) are labelled as errors.
- When something could not be checked (disabled clips, clips on a muted video track), the panel says so under the list instead of staying quiet.
Good to know
- One purchase covers both applications. Install once, and the panel appears in Premiere Pro and After Effects.
- A scan never changes your project. The only things Mistake Detector ever writes are the markers you ask for, and it can remove those again.
- There is nothing to learn. Open the panel, click Scan, read the list. The tutorial below covers the extra functions in under two minutes.

This Software Product is protected by copyright laws and treaties, as well as laws and treaties related to other forms of intellectual property. The author owns intellectual property rights in the Software Product. The Licensee's ("you" or "your") license to download, use, copy, or change the Software Product is subject to these rights and to all the terms and conditions of this End User License Agreement ("Agreement").
Acceptance
YOU ACCEPT AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT BY SELECTING THE "ACCEPT" OPTION AND DOWNLOADING THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT OR BY INSTALLING, USING, OR COPYING THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT. YOU MUST AGREE TO ALL OF THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT BEFORE YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO ALL OF THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT, YOU MUST SELECT "DECLINE" AND YOU MUST NOT INSTALL, USE, OR COPY THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT.
License Grant
This Agreement entitles you to install and use one copy of the Software Product. In addition, you may make one archival copy of the Software Product. The archival copy must be on a storage medium other than a hard drive, and may only be used for the reinstallation of the Software Product. This Agreement does not permit the installation or use of multiple copies of the Software Product, or the installation of the Software Product on more than one computer at any given time, on a system that allows shared used of applications, on a multi-user network, or on any configuration or system of computers that allows multiple users. Multiple copy use or installation is only allowed if you obtain an appropriate licensing agreement for each user and each copy of the Software Product.
Restrictions on Transfer
Without first obtaining the express written consent of the author, you may not assign your rights and obligations under this Agreement, or redistribute, encumber, sell, rent, lease, sublicense, or otherwise transfer your rights to the Software Product.
Restrictions on Use
You may not use, copy, or install the Software Product on any system with more than one computer, or permit the use, copying, or installation of the Software Product by more than one user or on more than one computer. If you hold multiple, validly licensed copies, you may not use, copy, or install the Software Product on any system with more than the number of computers permitted by license, or permit the use, copying, or installation by more users, or on more computers than the number permitted by license.
You may not decompile, "reverse-engineer", disassemble, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code for the Software Product.
Restrictions on Alteration
You may not modify the Software Product or create any derivative work of the Software Product or its accompanying documentation. Derivative works include but are not limited to translations. You may not alter any files or libraries in any portion of the Software Product.
Restrictions on Copying
You may not copy any part of the Software Product except to the extent that licensed use inherently demands the creation of a temporary copy stored in computer memory and not permanently affixed on storage medium. You may make one archival copy which must be stored on a medium other than a computer hard drive.
Disclaimer of Warranties and Limitation of Liability
UNLESS OTHERWISE EXPLICITLY AGREED TO IN WRITING BY THE AUTHOR, THE AUTHOR MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, IN FACT OR IN LAW, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OTHER THAN AS SET FORTH IN THIS AGREEMENT OR IN THE LIMITED WARRANTY DOCUMENTS PROVIDED WITH THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT.
The author makes no warranty that the Software Product will meet your requirements or operate under your specific conditions of use. The author makes no warranty that operation of the Software Product will be secure, error free, or free from interruption. YOU MUST DETERMINE WHETHER THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT SUFFICIENTLY MEETS YOUR REQUIREMENTS FOR SECURITY AND UNINTERRUPTABILITY. YOU BEAR SOLE RESPONSIBILITY AND ALL LIABILITY FOR ANY LOSS INCURRED DUE TO FAILURE OF THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT TO MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS. Limitation of Remedies and Damages
Any claim must be made within the applicable warranty period. All warranties cover only defects arising under normal use and do not include malfunctions or failure resulting from misuse, abuse, neglect, alteration, problems with electrical power, acts of nature, unusual temperatures or humidity, improper installation, or damage determined by the author to have been caused by you. All limited warranties on the Software Product are granted only to you and are non-transferable. You agree to indemnify and hold the author harmless from all claims, judgments, liabilities, expenses, or costs arising from your breach of this Agreement and/or acts or omissions.
Governing Law, Jurisdiction and Costs
This Agreement is governed by the laws of New York, without regard to New York's conflict or choice of law provisions.
Severability
If any provision of this Agreement shall be held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remainder of this Agreement shall remain in full force and effect. To the extent any express or implied restrictions are not permitted by applicable laws, these express or implied restrictions shall remain in force and effect to the maximum extent permitted by such applicable laws.
