For those who regularly duplicate, version out, or rename comps with text layers, including the pre-comps within, this is the script for you!
What used to take multiple, tedius steps can now be done all at the same time with just a single click! No more duplicating comps, renaming them and then manually digging deep to change the text layers over and over. Rename-a-Duper has 6 different modes to handle multiple kinds of renaming and duplications needs, from a basic Find & Replace, to more advanced (but easy to use) built-in spreadsheet modes that are capable of easily churning out dozens or even hundreds of versions. Great for making different language versions as well. Just select the comps you want to rename or duplicate, and let Rename-a-Duper do it all for you, from making a quick change to cranking out or altering dozens of comps at a time!
Rename, Duplicate, and Dupe List
- Rename : Renames all selected comps, in Project window or Timeline, and text inside. Even renames folders in the Project window.
- Duplicate: Duplicate selected comps, in either Project window or in the Timeline!
- Dupe List: Enter a list of words in the replace input, and churn out a duplicate versions for each item! Project or Timeline window as well.
- all three have the option to recursively rename or duplicate pre-comps, as deep as you want to go..
- options to rename comp/text only on main comps, only in pre-comps, or a mix.
Plus options to duplicate movies, stills, solids, audio, vector as well as 3d Objects in the Project window.

- Spreadsheet Find & Replace : a built-in spreadsheet (with CSV import) that can search and replace text in comps and text layers within each comp, for multiple versions as well. Up to 500 entries.
With Built-in Spreadsheets!
No need to use an external spreadsheet program (but you still have that option!), Using either the Named Text Layers or Find & Replace Spreadsheets modes, you can easily rename or make multiple versions of any of your existing comps, with no need to set up special templates or complex configurations. Add or delete columns or rows, and even save and load your sets to re-use, share, or even give the saved file (JSON) to AI to convert to different languages for you. Works with Multi-line text as well!
Add or Replace Prefixes and Suffixes - at the same time.
While renaming or duplicating comps, Rename-a-Duper can replace or add prefixes or suffixes to either main comps, pre-comps, or both at the same time during the renaming or duplication process.
Change Comp Settings
- Change frame rates of comps or pre-comps
- Change comp start time and duration (+/- amounts as well) - in frame or timecode
- Change comp background colors
Fixes Expressions
Renaming and duplicating comps and the text inside might cause problems when expressions are involved between them, but Rename-a-Duper can fix those expressions to prevent errors, as well as ensure no two comps are named alike.
Superior Text Renaming
- Retains fonts, font styles, colors and font size when renaming text that contains multiple fonts or styles!
- Curly Quotes and Apostrophes checkbox to automatically have AE use those instead of straight quotes and apostrophes.
Customize the UI to suit your needs
- Not everyone might want all these options to be displayed all the time time, so there's checkboxes in the settings to show only the ones you want to be using, or hide the ones you might not want to use too often, keeping the interface nice and tidy.
- Plus a checkbox to relocate the Rename/Duplicate button to the very top of the UI so the interface can be shrunken down even further and more easily docked on the side, then expand as needed.
Show Summary and Select Duplicates.
- Show Summary checkbox to show/track all the processes that have occurred, great to see how many pre-comps or items have been renamed, duplicated or processed.
- Select Duplicates will select all the duplicated comps when done, very handy for instantly sending them all to the Render Queue - using the RenderQ script, (NYOP, highly recommend!)
Apply AE Label colors
- Have After Effects setup to use custom label colors? Rename-a-Duper will recognize them!
- Apply your custom After Effects Label Colors (*not just system defaults) to any main comp or pre-comp
- additional options to apply none, or random label colors to comps and pre-comps
Grouping options
- Group all renamed comps and elements inside into a new or into an existing project folder
- Group all duplicated comps, pre-comps and duplicated elements into a new or existing project folder
- Group original folder name hierarchy or comp-name hierarchy, or without a hierarchy
- Group elements in individual folder, or a single folder, within the hierarchy or not
Sanitized Search and Replace Comp Names
Prefer or want to avoid having spaces or special characters in your new comp names? Rename-a-Duper can identify even sanitized search items in your comp names and replace them with a sanitized replace text as well! So for example, if your comp name is "Monday98c" and text layer is "Monday 9/8c", and you want to change everything to Tuesday 10/9c, Rename a Duper will identify both the comp name and text, resulting in a comp that's named "Tuesday109c" while the text inside will be "Tuesday 10/9c" (as seen in the How-To demo).
- Enter into a custom list for all characters to sanitize from comp renaming.
- There's even a search button next to the find input that will scan the entire project and select any matches or sanitized matches, for easy renaming of all the comps in the project that match.
Additional features via External Scripts!
Rename-a-Duper isn't constricted to just its built in features, but has the option to run 10 sets of additional external scripts during the renaming and duplication process that perform a variety of things to main comps and pre-comps. For the initial release, there's:
- "First and Last Split" : Scans the comps being processed and instantly converts a named First and named Last layer to just the first or last names.
- "UnSolo": Changes layers that are set to solo'd back to un-solo, and then turns off the visibility on all previously visible layers.
- "Resize": Much like AE's "Scale Composition" script, it scales comps and the layers inside to match, but will not resize locked pre-comps.
- "Uppercase" and "Lowercase": Handy for when you want to rename the comp with mixed-case while making the text layers all uppercase or lowercase.
- "Translate Whole Comp": Fun little (Mac only) experimental script that then calls up Apple Shortcuts to translate every word in a comp to another language.

License Grant
This Agreement entitles you to install and use one copy of the Software Product. In addition, you may make one archival copy of the Software Product. The archival copy must be on a storage medium other than a hard drive, and may only be used for the reinstallation of the Software Product. This Agreement does not permit the installation or use of multiple copies of the Software Product, or the installation of the Software Product on more than one computer at any given time, on a system that allows shared used of applications, on a multi-user network, or on any configuration or system of computers that allows multiple users. Multiple copy use or installation is only allowed if you obtain an appropriate licensing agreement for each user and each copy of the Software Product.
Restrictions on Transfer
Without first obtaining the express written consent of the author, you may not assign your rights and obligations under this Agreement, or redistribute, encumber, sell, rent, lease, sublicense, or otherwise transfer your rights to the Software Product.
Restrictions on Use
You may not use, copy, or install the Software Product on any system with more than one computer, or permit the use, copying, or installation of the Software Product by more than one user or on more than one computer. If you hold multiple, validly licensed copies, you may not use, copy, or install the Software Product on any system with more than the number of computers permitted by license, or permit the use, copying, or installation by more users, or on more computers than the number permitted by license.
You may not decompile, "reverse-engineer", disassemble, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code for the Software Product.
Restrictions on Alteration
You may not modify the Software Product or create any derivative work of the Software Product or its accompanying documentation. Derivative works include but are not limited to translations. You may not alter any files or libraries in any portion of the Software Product.
Restrictions on Copying
You may not copy any part of the Software Product except to the extent that licensed use inherently demands the creation of a temporary copy stored in computer memory and not permanently affixed on storage medium. You may make one archival copy which must be stored on a medium other than a computer hard drive.
Disclaimer of Warranties and Limitation of Liability

The author makes no warranty that the Software Product will meet your requirements or operate under your specific conditions of use. The author makes no warranty that operation of the Software Product will be secure, error free, or free from interruption. Limitation of Remedies and Damages
Any claim must be made within the applicable warranty period. All limited warranties on the Software Product are granted only to you and are non-transferable. You agree to indemnify and hold the author harmless from all claims, judgments, liabilities, expenses, or costs arising from your breach of this Agreement and/or acts or omissions.
Governing Law, Jurisdiction and Costs
This Agreement is governed by the laws of New York, without regard to New York's conflict or choice of law provisions.
Severability
If any provision of this Agreement shall be held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remainder of this Agreement shall remain in full force and effect. To the extent any express or implied restrictions are not permitted by applicable laws, these express or implied restrictions shall remain in force and effect to the maximum extent permitted by such applicable laws.
