Description

Sequence Compare tells you what changed
between two versions of a sequence.

Premiere's Comparison View compares frames. This compares the edit itself, clip by clip, track by track, and lists every difference with a timecode. Open the new cut and know in seconds what moved, what was trimmed, what is gone and what was quietly re-graded.

Workflow

Pick. Compare. Jump.

1

Pick two versions

Any two sequences in the open project. No naming convention, no XML export, nothing to prepare first.

2

Press Compare

Both timelines are read and matched clip by clip, through razor cuts, ripple edits and clips dragged to another track.

3

Jump to the change

Click a row: Premiere moves the playhead and selects the clip. Work down the list until you have seen everything.

What it finds

Every kind of edit, named and counted

Added

New material

Clips that are in the new version and were not there before — picture, sound, graphics, adjustment layers.

Removed

Deleted material

Clips that are gone, reported at the spot where they are now missing, with the old version one click away.

Moved

Shifted in time

With the exact frame count, so a one-frame nudge is as visible as a two-minute move.

Trimmed

Reworked edges

In and out points reported separately, each with its own frame count, so you see which side of the cut changed.

Replaced

Different source

A new source in the same slot reads as one replacement, not as a delete plus an insert.

Retimed

Speed changed

Speed as a percentage, with reverse flagged.

Track

Moved to another track

A clip that kept its place in time but changed lane — reported as the track change it is, not as a new clip.

Modified

Effects and settings

Effects applied, removed or reordered, and every parameter that changed: Motion, opacity, clip volume and pan, keyframes, the text of a title.

Also reported: transitions added, removed, retyped or relengthened; clips switched on or off; renamed clips; nested sequences whose content was recut; and sequence settings,; frame size, frame rate, sample rate, start timecode.

Ripple, roll, slip and slide come out as the trims and moves they are. A razor cut that changes nothing reports nothing.

The list

Every change is one row

Timecode, track, clip name, and a pill for each kind of change on that clip
A clip that moved and got a new grade says both on the same line
Open a row and the numbers behind it are listed under the pill they belong to
Neighbouring clips carrying the same change collapse into one row, so a ripple edit is a single line instead of two hundred
Sort by timecode, track, clip or kind of change
Export the whole list as CSV for a report or a handoff

Audio view

Picture and sound

Audio is compared just as closely

One switch flips the whole panel between video and audio, each side with its own count
Music and dialogue are matched the same way: added, removed, moved, trimmed, retimed
Clip volume, pan and audio effects are compared parameter by parameter
Audio fades and transitions are reported when they are added, removed or relengthened
Video and audio never share a list, so a music change can't bury a picture change

The mini-map

The whole comparison at a glance

Above the list, each timeline is drawn as a strip: one lane per track, every clip coloured by what happened to it. Two strips side by side show where the versions drift apart before you read a single row.

Click straight into it

Click any clip in a strip and Premiere jumps there. Click a track number to select that whole track.

Both sides of one edit

Selecting a change outlines the clip where it is now and where it used to be, on both strips at once.

Zoom in on a busy reel

Zoom and scroll the strips, or drag them taller, when a long timeline packs too much into one screen.

Settings

You decide what counts as a change

Switch categories off and compare only what matters on this pass
Turning Modified off skips reading effect stacks, noticeably faster on a heavy timeline
Show or hide the mini-map, the project name bar and the CSV button
Mark clip types with short tags: adjustment layer, matte, graphic, still
Group neighbouring clips with the same change, or list every one of them
Column widths and mini-map height are dragged and remembered

Up to five versions

Follow a cut through a whole round of notes

Add up to five sequences and compare them in a chain: v1 to v2, v2 to v3, and so on. Each pair gets its own tab, so you can see what each round of notes actually did instead of one merged pile of differences.

Useful the other way round, too: compare today's cut with the one you approved last week and find the change nobody wrote down.

Before you take the new cut

Stop diffing by eye

A version that came back from an assistant, an editor in another city or a client's "small fix" is a timeline you did not build. Scrubbing two sequences side by side to find what moved costs an hour and still misses the frame nobody mentions.

Comparing them takes seconds, and nothing gets past it quietly.

Good to know: Sequence Compare only reads your sequences — it never moves a clip, changes an effect or writes a marker. Both compared sequences are opened while they are read, because Premiere reports stale values for a sequence it has never displayed.
