How to activate a specific layer in a pre-comp AE?

Hi,
If this is not the place to ask this, please advice and excuse me
I'm looking for a way to control the layers in a pre-comp, with "I think" a slide controller.
For example, a composition contains a movie which goes from a start still frame - to actually playing - to a end still frame
But I only want to keyframe the moment the movie starts to play and stop at the end frame
I have 24 movies in a grid, so easy would be nice
Is there an easy way?
I am a noob in scripting land, but I thought maybe use 3 layers (start still - movie - end still)
Then point to the index of these layers and start/stop play somehow?
Am I making sense?
