separating text in AI to separate layers

it seems you can create more interesting 3d text in AI .. i've just spent most of the day screwing around with AI -- which i'm fairly new at --- trying to figure out if you can apply 3d effects to a line of text, and then break the words in that line of text into different layers. i guess when you begin adding effects to text, AI turns it into an object ... so that complicates it.
