Automate freeze frame generation

    I'm wondering if anyone knows how to automate freeze frame generation at given "in" and "out" points for After Effects.  I have seen a template recently where you drop a video clip into a comp with preset in and out points.  

    The frames that the in and out points are set on (depending on where you drop your clip in the comp) are designated as freeze frames.  These freeze frames are then automatically inserted into a comp where a freeze frame on either end of a video comp automatically transition into said video, and then transition out back into the "out" freeze frame.  

    Hopefully this makes sense.  I'm not even sure where to start in terms of finding out how to do this.  I'm building my own such project, but am having to make my own freeze frames and then place a new video layer on top of the freeze frame and manually line up the two points so that they transition smoothly from the freeze frame to the exact next corresponding frame in the video comp.
