Data Visualisation Help

Currently working on a project that requires some data visualisation - likely expression-heavy, so it's a bit beyond me. The concept is a very simplified fallen.io, with a grid of dots that need to split into different categories depending on data points which can be edited (perhaps via a JSON). I'm struggling to work out how (or if) this can be scripted using expressions in vanilla AE.
If anyone has previous experience in this kind of data visualisation and could point me in the right direction, I'd be happy to compensate you for some help via video call or something similar. Thanks!
