I have a tattoo on an arm in a clip, where the camera is panning around the arm at a slight rotation with arm rotating a bit as well. What's the recommended best practice as some points will definitely move behind points of the arm? The goal is to remove the tattoo entirely.

Love this plug-in, but I am getting a strange result on a basic Track. The Track worked out great BUT, there is a faint Grid on my footage where the Track area is in the main comp. It's almost like a displacement map of a Grid. It is only visible in the main comp. Not the Precomp generated by Lockdown. Any thoughts? Thanks

I have no idea, but you can send me a project or a screengrab through a help ticket, and it may help me figure it out. We have a watermark grid before licensing, but that should be super bold and noticeable. No idea what could make something faint. Could it possible some sort of weird moire effect?
Hey, is there a setting I need to activate to get lockdown to only track the alpha channel? I've isolated someone's leg with composite brush, precomped it, but lockdown still tries to track the thing that I keyed out that was overlapping the leg. I've got interpolate on if that makes a difference.
Really keen to test this out, so I'm working with the trial version. I followed your installation instructions and placed the Lockdown and GenerateVectors files into the plugins folder, but when you instruct to 'Open the Render Queue:
Go to Output Module
Choose the Dropdown and then Make Template
Press Load, and choose GV.aom', frankly, I have no idea what you mean by this. If I add a comp to the render queue, and twirl down the output module, there is no 'Make Template
Press Load'. If you could please explain this more clearly that would be great.
That said, when I go to effects> Vranos> Lockdown and Generate Vectors are there. When I add lockdown to my layer, I get a grid pattern entirely covering it. Is this because of trial mode and can you confirm the plugin installed properly please?

Try to expand the alpha channel a bit wider with a matte choke. Ok, so here's the problem- In this current version of Lockdown, the alpha channel acts to terminate tracks. HOWEVER, it processes after the tracking process has already happened, meaning the tracking data underneath for other object still exists. If the tracker has trouble tracking on the leg, it may be using motion from the overlapping object, which seems to be your case. So in short, tracking farther away from the obstruction, and making the matte wider will give better results. We are already tweaking settings for the next update of Lockdown that will tighten up the motion data to the correct objects, and will eventually ignore them completely. Sorry for the inconvenience, I would've figured in the vast majority of cases, you wouldn't see this issue. The next tracking update we put out will help solve this, and it will be a free update.

The grid is because of trial mode, however when you open the popout, there is no watermark. As for installing the .AOM, this is the last major version of Lockdown where that step will exist, before all tracking is taken inside of the popout, and generate vectors is retired. So if you really want to install the legacy "extremely accurate" tracking, here are the old install instructions The generate vectors tracking mode only works in the After Effects view, so when using "Connected Vectors" mode, you can't have the popout open. I know that is dumb and annoying, which is why it's all going away soon. For the most part, we'd recommend just tracking from within the popout, and ignoring Generate Vectors, and the .AOM that renders them.
When you have some time on hand, I would like to have a function or an instruction video on how to combine Lockdown with a displacement map (like in Photoshop) for a more natural blending (shifting pixels) of fine details when you lock your graphic on a surface like fur, grass, leaves, rough concrete or other microstructures.
This new version keeps crashing for me every time I get through the steps and hit "lockdown"
I am having this issue as well -- After Effects (current version/MacOS) crashes when I hit "Lockdown".
p.s. - you're killing it, Chris Vranos, thanks for your work and quick responses!
Could you both send in help tickets with system specs? Sorry, I'm not sure why it's crashing. We did just re-write a lot of rendering code and usually a crash is hardware related. Are either of you using the new m1 processors? Not sure if it could be related but I have an old Mac that I test on.
If possible please send a project file, and a log file. (whatever is reasonable, I know sometimes you can't send project files. Even without media, the aep could be helpful)
Log files Please watch this video. Log files contain a record you can send to us, that tells us basically everything that happened since you opened Lockdown, until you closed it. It makes it much easier for us to find bugs. Please make sure to delete the log folder after sending us the log, because the log file will get very very large over time if you keep the folder. Basically, if the folder exists, the log file is created and written to. If not, the log file is not created or written to. So you don't want the log folder to exist for any longer than it needs to be.

Well I might not use a displacement map, probably just some sort of texture map to cut things up. We're going to have a new feature for evaluating track accuracy soon, it might make sense to have a tutorial along with that, where you focus on close details. I'll get back to tutorials soon, at the moment we're just pretty bogged down with backlogged features.

Thanks Chris,
That makes sense now.
I also wanted to ask whether it might be possible to use Lockdown to track specific points on a molecular structure and then, rather than assigning an image to that whole structure, whether you could add glowing lights to each of the individual tracking points you've selected? What I want to do is show a process of activation (indicated by the glowing lights) on specific atoms of the structure and have the lights follow the atoms as they move through space. I hope this makes sense? Do you think this is possible with Lockdown?

Yes, after tracking any point, select it, and press "Externalize point". Then press UU with the layer selected, and it will show the point's keyframes. You can then copy these to a null object, and use the point's positions like any other object in After Effects.

Chris, I just want to say when Adobe makes an offer to buy you out, hold out until they offer at least a billion. That's how incredible this is.
One Billion? We're goin all the way to a Trillion! Nah but jokes aside, I've been enjoying working independently. I'm very glad you like the software. Much more to come very soon!
How come the aescripts manager is saying that lockdown isn't compatible with ae2021 and don't install it for that version while the website is saying otherwise...?

I have no idea. It's definitely compatible with Ae 2021, we probably forgot to set a checkbox in the manager app. You can manually install for Ae 2021 by downloading the trial, and putting it into your plugins folder. (more install info on the home page FAQ) I'll take a look at the manager app and see if there are any issues.
I think we did a really bad job advertising this, but Lockdown 2 is a free upgrade from Lockdown 1. The Lockdown 1 license works for Lockdown 2. Someday we'll release Lockdown 3, and that'll probably be a paid upgrade, but today is not that day.

Sorry, I forgot to update the readme file. GenerateVectors.aex is no longer needed in 2.2. All of it's functionality is fully contained within Lockdown.aex now. There's no issue with the single installable file, The issue is with my complete lack of organization, and my ability to handle simple tasks.
Love this plugin so much - its in the process of saving a video I thought was lost!
That being said, I am having one issue I hope you can help with. When I track and playback in the pop out window, everything looks great. When I lockdown and apply my texture, it seems MOSTLY fine, but I get random jagged polygon glitches in the texture (essentially they kind of "pop" in and out for a frame or two at a time). I have a few different computers to work on, and when I switch from one to the other these problems seem to go away (sometimes). I've had the issue happen on my 2019 iMac Pro, and on my 2018 MacBook Pro both running AE 2021. Any idea what is happening and how I might fix it without switching computers?
I bought Lockdown last year and already update the TrackerVIz, but for some reason when I try to Lockdown some project I have been working a message in AE pops up saying that something is wrong and that I should put in contact whit you. I really don´t know what is going on.
Can you help me?. I show you an image of what is happening.
Thank you

I have no idea what that error is. But that being said, Lockdown 2.2.2 is a free upgrade to all users, so maybe the best thing to do would be to update to the latest version and see if the error goes away. You can download using the aescripts manager app. My best guess is that because you're on Mac, that error message is referencing a code signing error. Last year, Apple changed it so all Apple developers had to update the way plugins were signed, and old plugins would stop working when the OS was updated. Our latest version should work if that's the issue, and if it doesn't, please send us a help ticket.

Hi Chirs
Thanks for the answer. But to be honest with you I don´t know how to upgrade my versión of Lockdown. When I open the assist app to update, Lockdown does not appear. Am I doing something wrong??? I attach an image of my account.
Thanks again Chris.

I had nothing to do with the manager app, so you should send in a help ticket to aescripts for that, however for Lockdown, you should probably just do a manual install. It's slightly annoying, but only takes like 5 minutes. Here are the instructions from the homepage:
How do I install Lockdown 2.2 using the aescripts manager app?
Go to aescripts.com/lockdown (Top of this page) Press the green "Try" button to access the downloads, and download/unzip. Enter the Windows folder for a Windows install, copy and paste the .aex plugin file here: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects 2021\Support Files\Plug-ins Enter the Mac folder for a Mac install, copy and paste the .plugin file here: Applications/Adobe After Effects 2021/Plug-ins/ Go to aescripts.com/downloadable/customer/products and find your license code. It takes about 15 minutes to generate after purchasing. Copy your License Code. Apply Lockdown to an empty layer. Press "Register" at the top of the plug-in. Paste in your license code. Press "activate" In After Effects, go to Edit/Purge/All Memory & Disk Cache
I'm missing install files that I've seen in older versions or tutorials.
All you need to know is Lockdown 2.2 ONLY requires a single self contained install file. It's Lockdown.aex for Windows, Lockdown.plugin for Mac. You may still have the following files in your computer from older versions. You can safely delete these:

Well, actually no. We released 2.2.2 about 1 week after 2.2.0, as a quick fix for that graphics card issue. Also, it looks like we're on track to release 2.3.0 later today! This build has a few fixes, and also makes frame caching much faster and more persistent, so in some cases may speed up preview and playback by around 2-3x for all users.
Again, I apologize to everyone for the constant patches. We're going crazy on speed optimizations now as we port a lot of operations to the GPU. This gets tricky because there are so many hardware/driver combinations out there that we can't test for. We hope that each time you're annoyed by another update, you notice the speed increase, and feel like it was worth it. 5 minutes updating may save you collective hours tracking.
We expect the madness to stabilize by the end of the summer, and we'll be focused more on features then.
Since I updated to 2.3.0 I can't generate trackers grid/points with the lasso tool in the popup interface anymore, I see the yellow lasso, but it does not generate points.! However I can generate point by cmd click. Also when I open the popout windows I can't see the footage till I zoom in or out.
We bought 2 liscenses and my coworker have no problem; he is on:
Mac os : Catalina 10.15.7
AE 17.5.1 (Build 47)
And Im on:
Imac pro 2017 os Mojave 10.14.6
Radeon Pro Vega 64 16 GB
AE 2020 17.7.0
This is the best plugin I ever used, it make the impossible possible!

Thanks you for that Mr.Vranos!
When you command click and drag on Mac, it should create a blue lasso, and create points. When you just click and drag with nothing selected, it should be a yellow line, which only selects points, never creates them. So if you're saying that you're command clicking and dragging, and getting a yellow lasso, that means your command key is not being received by the popout. The first thing on the checklist would be
Update to the latest version of Ae 2021 in the Creative Cloud Check for updates on your graphics card Restart your computer And obviously this is a pretty big ask that's not possible for many users, and it may not be related, but we do all of our testing on the latest version of OSX.
So beyond that, I'm trying to think of any possible reason your input may not be received by our plugin. Could you please do what you can in the list above, then submit a help ticket if it's still not working?
As for the video not being visible until you zoom in or out, that sounds like something GPU related, and I'll need to ask my team. Hopefully we can solve these issues soon.
Composite Brush or Generate Vectors not showing when i go to add the effect? anyone know why?
Yes. Generate Vectors is a 'retired' plugin, and all the things it did are now done better within the Lockdown 2.0 popout. You won't expect to see it in Lockdown 2.0 and later. I can't say for sure with Composite Brush, how did you try to install it? The file is located at https://aescripts.com/composite-brush/ under the green "try" button, or it can be installed through the aescripts manager app. It doesn't install along with Lockdown, although that would be a good idea if it did...
Ok perfect! Thankyou, I thought I did something wrong...
Also the steps are not there anymore too like in the old tutorials im assuming? Like the Track left, Track right, Track all and steps 1-8 ...
Thats all done now in the the pop out too?
Yeah, just check out aescripts.com/lockdown for tutorials, all of them on the homepage are up to date. The rest are from old versions. Sorry the UI has changed so drastically, but Lockdown 1.0 was just so slow being constrained to the After Effects control Window. The popout will really serve you better in the long run. Also, apologies in advance but there are a lot of UI changes coming in the near future. That being said, I really do think most people will consider them huge improvements, and hopefully not mind re-learning it as a tradeoff.
Im hoping to learn more about tracking objects and creating the meshes... i shot a video of my son and he moved his head back and forth and the mesh got all jagged etc... and moved off his face... ive looked at a few videos there are ways around this i know, but im just learning. Thankyou for you super quick responses Chris!

Well, the fastest solution might be to use the 'extremely accurate' tracking mode. But please do feel free to send in a video via a help ticket, and I'd be glad to take a quick look, and screen capture any solutions I can think of.
So, of course you would be rightfully biased. But if I have Lockdown (which I am salivating at the idea of buying) do I still need Mocha Pro 2021? Does Lockdown do boring old Planar tracking too?
So, of course you would be rightfully biased. But if I have Lockdown (which I am salivating at the idea of buying) do I still need Mocha Pro 2021? Does Lockdown do boring old Planar tracking too?
Lockdown does point tracking, however as of the last version, we've included a feature called "planar interpolation". This means that any points which are not currently alive, like 'extension points' will look at all 'live' points, and try to follow them as a plane. Put in plain English, this makes planar tracking very easy. You track as many points of a plane as you can, then you can create 4 'extension points' as a plane around them to be your mesh. I haven't done a release video on it, I'm under a huge crunch getting all the features ready for our next big update. But there will be a heavy focus on planar tracking over the next few months, and making it ridiculously easy and intuitive. Tutorials to come. Also, Mocha Ae is built into After Effects for free, so while I would still (in an admittedly biased manner) suggest you use Lockdown for all your tracking, but you don't need to buy Mocha pro to use the Ae version for Planar tracking. But really, I have some insane free updates coming soon as part of Lockdown 2.0. Just wait.

Thank you Chris. Then I will proudly announce that I'm hitting the BUY button right now. Looking forward to your future updates.
Always feel free to reach out with a help ticket if you're trying something specific, especially with the planar tracking which is not super well documented (yet).

Cheers,
Chris

As for installing the .AOM, this is the last major version of Lockdown where that step will exist, before all tracking is taken inside of the popout, and generate vectors is retired.
So if you really want to install the legacy "extremely accurate" tracking, here are the old install instructions
The generate vectors tracking mode only works in the After Effects view, so when using "Connected Vectors" mode, you can't have the popout open. I know that is dumb and annoying, which is why it's all going away soon. For the most part, we'd recommend just tracking from within the popout, and ignoring Generate Vectors, and the .AOM that renders them.

Log files
Please watch this video.

How do I install Lockdown 2.2 using the aescripts manager app?
Go to https://aescripts.com/learn/aescripts-aeplugins-manager-app/
Download the manager app and launch it.
Select Lockdown.
Press Install.
Press License.
How do I manually install Lockdown 2.2?
Go to aescripts.com/lockdown (Top of this page)
Press the green "Try" button to access the downloads, and download/unzip.
Enter the Windows folder for a Windows install, copy and paste the .aex plugin file here: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects 2021\Support Files\Plug-ins
Enter the Mac folder for a Mac install, copy and paste the .plugin file here: Applications/Adobe After Effects 2021/Plug-ins/
Go to aescripts.com/downloadable/customer/products and find your license code. It takes about 15 minutes to generate after purchasing.
Copy your License Code.
Apply Lockdown to an empty layer.
Press "Register" at the top of the plug-in.
Paste in your license code.
Press "activate"
In After Effects, go to Edit/Purge/All Memory & Disk Cache
I'm missing install files that I've seen in older versions or tutorials.
All you need to know is Lockdown 2.2 ONLY requires a single self contained install file. It's Lockdown.aex for Windows, Lockdown.plugin for Mac. You may still have the following files in your computer from older versions. You can safely delete these:
GenerateVectors.aex
GenerateVectors.plugin
Lockdown.JSXBIN
GV.aom
(The trial file can be licensed, and will function identically vs if you're installing from the manager app, or downloading from your products page.)

Radeon Pro Vega 64 16 GB
Update to the latest version of Ae 2021 in the Creative Cloud
Check for updates on your graphics card
Restart your computer
And obviously this is a pretty big ask that's not possible for many users, and it may not be related, but we do all of our testing on the latest version of OSX.

I can't say for sure with Composite Brush, how did you try to install it? The file is located at https://aescripts.com/composite-brush/ under the green "try" button, or it can be installed through the aescripts manager app. It doesn't install along with Lockdown, although that would be a good idea if it did...

Just wait.
