Fractal Flames are always beautiful and AEFlame is a great plugin created by Andrew Davidson, which helps AE users explore the depth of Mathematical space right in After Effects. Interestingly, this plugin existed since AE 4.0, but the author didn’t port it to the recent versions of After Effects. Luckily, he was generous enough to release the source of the plugin so this is the CS4/CS5 port.
Remember, this is just a direct port and it has not been extensively tested. This should be considered a beta quality release. However we have not experienced any issues with it so far. You can report issues, but don’t expect any support.
Install Instructions:
Drop the appropriate plug-in file into your Plug-ins folder.
Apply the Effect from Effect->Render->AEFlame

help me boss backyard family game information??
I run 5.5 on a mac with quadcore i7. intalling the AEFlames is not a problem, but once I start toggle some switches AE just crashes! time after time… what to do?
Thanks so much for the port, love this plugin. Think FlameAE will ever be able to import .flame files?
It also appears that for some reason, this plugin does not render using the command line renderer. After Effects CS5 just spits out a bunch of black frames instead of processing the AE Flame plugin.
Also, the plugin appears to not be multithreaded, as when processing frames for preview and on render, only one core in multicore systems are used.
I wish I knew enough C++ to fix these problems, because this plugin produces some awesome looking images.
I am experiencing the same behavior on AE CS5 on OSX 10.6.7. I adjust the “Parameter Set” slider and nothing happens. However, after playing around a bit, I discovered that you need to adjust the parameters of the Xform0 and Xform1 categories. It seems that if you adjust the linear, sinusoidal, spherical, swirl, horseshoe, polar, etc. percentages, this has a significant effect on the shape of the generated fractal.
In the Global Parameters, you can adjust the 2d pan and zoom. For increased interactivity, it helps to set the plugin to ‘draft quality’ under the “Global Commands,” and set the preview resolution to Half or 3rd, as well.
I’m not sure what Parameter Set is supposed to do, but it doesn’t do anything now.
I hope this helps.
I’ve used the old version of this plug-in before; I’m really pleased that you’ve ported to CS4/5.
Unfortunately I can’t get the plug-in to show up in CS4. I’ve dropped it straight into my Plug-ins folder, C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS4\Support Files\Plug-ins. Should it have been in a sub-folder? I’m using Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.
same here.I just use the old version and its works good:)
I’ve been playing around with this plugin and I think it’s got a ton of potential. I will post a link to it on my website. Thanks for porting this to CS5!
The “Parameter Set” slider mentioned in Victoria’s tutorial does not appear to be doing anything to the default shape of the plugin. It just won’t budge. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any insights.
Same here – chnage of value in “parameter set” makes no difference. And the plugin looks soooo sweet!
Nothing to add, except to say that I am suffering the same problem. I’m now using the old version of the plug-in with CS4 and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.
Is it win7 problem? (Aftereffects CS5)
Same for me. I am using CS5.5 on a Mac
The parameter file is, sadly, missing from this release of AEFlame. I’ve updated the tutorial to reflect that. Afraid that, for the moment, you’re stuck just moving all the sliders around until you find something you like.
there is no CS4 (32 bit) included in the file for windows only mac redundant files are there pls fix
The original AEFlame version should work with CS4 on the Windows.
But that version isn’t included in the download. For simplicities sake would you mind just throwing it in there?

This is what I did. Meaning copying the plug-in to the appropriate folder. After all it isn’t the first plug-in I have used.
After installing it correctly. I launched AE. Then AE gave me the dialogue quoted above.
Although it gave me the dialogue it works in any case. Once I discovered where to find it in the effects list (under render). Which is quite long in my case. Weird.
Here is the AE dialogue:
After Effects error: Can
You shouldn’t open the plugin file. To install the plugin you have to drop the plugin file in the After Effects Plugin Folder and then restart After Effects. The Plugins folder is located at “/Applications/Adobe After Effects CS5/Plug-ins”.

As the plugin has exsisted since v4.0 could a version for CS3 users be compiled?
Ditto! I have CS3 and would love to be able to add this plug-in to my arsenal of effects. Please consider making this available!
Thanks for linking my tutorial!
Looks like your build of AEFlame doesn’t include the parameter sets file. (AEFlameSettings.txt in the old Windows version.) Any chance of adding that? It makes the plugin a lot more useful.
ah ah, I was trying to compile it for CS4 :p
are you gonna release the source as well ?
cheers,
F
The source is the same as the one from Andrew’s Website. The only change being, the About dialog and 64bit PiPLs.
