Adobe dropped Pixel Bender support in After Effects CS6 so this plugin will not work in CS6.

This plugin generates a ring as a texture for shockwaves, etc for visual effects. It has enough options to be fairly flexible, but not so much as to be overbearing.

Options are:

  • Center: Center point for the ring
  • Radius: Radius of the ring
  • Feather: Softness of the ring’s outer edge
  • Expansion: Thickness of the ring
  • Opacity: Opacity of the ring
  • Color 1: Color near the outside
  • Color 2: Color near the inside
  • Smooth: Smooth interpolation (as opposed to linear)

Render Mode:

  • None: Render on transparent
  • Normal: Render on background
  • Add: Additive blending on background
  • (Stencil) Multiply: Reveals the background, kind of like stencil alpha
  • (Stencil) Multiply+Alpha: Same as above, but on transparent

  • The movie “The Secret” had a nice effect of a thought expanding into space like a shock wave. Can this be used in a similar fashion?

  • Andrew – thank you so much again for the technical assistance. I was able to rotate the shockring, duplicate it several times and stack them, apply a radial blur, and built a thick expanding torus, which is the effect I wanted. Thanks!

  • I thought that I had tried that, but I will give it another go!

    Thanks for the quick reply!

  • Hi Andrew!
First – thanks for all of the great work! I am new to AE (CS5), so please forgive my ignorance.
My main question: how can I rotate the ring on the plane of the image? When I put it on a layer, it shows as a flat ring as seen from the top. The controls for the shockring (including the ones for the layer) do not allow me to rotate it so that it is seen edge on. You were obviously able to do so, but (newbie me) have not been able to figure out how you did it.

I used it (as I could manage) in this draft trailer. Very cool effect, but I feel like I am just scratching the surface…

    • I think what you’re looking for is the 3D layer switch. This effect is a 2D effect which is meant to generate a texture that you can rotate/position in 3D space.

It’s as simple as enabling 3D on the layer, and fiddling with the rotation controls.

      Cheers,
      Andrew

  • I have some questions about using this plugin – how can I ask them of the author?
