Have you ever worked on an animation that involved something called MUSIC? It's the thing that comes out of your speakers while the video is playing.

If you treat the music in your videos as a first-class citizen, beat assistant is the tool for you. It automatically detects the beats per minute of your music and allows you to do a great many things with it.

  • set layer markers according to the beat
  • generate keyframes and animate to the beat
  • stagger layers according to the beat

Easily import to Premiere Pro Beat Assistant with Premiere Pro
The composition markers can also easily be imported into Premiere Pro, as Eran Stern shows in his tutorial about Beat Assistant with Premiere Pro.

No expressions
Think animation to the beat involves some weird expressions magic to tie your animation to audio keyframes? Think again! With beat assistant, you do it the mamoworld way: animate all the properties directly, using an intuitive interface.

Beat Detection is done using the popular SoundTouch Audio Processing Library. While .wav files are supported natively, to work with .mp3 and .aif files, you'll need to install the separate LAME tool.

Where is the difference to BeatEdit for Premiere Pro?

BeatEdit for Premiere Pro and Beat Assistant for After Effects are very different.

BeatEdit for Premiere Pro

  • has a way more robust and accurate beat detection engine. In contrast to the Ae tool, it not only predicts the beats per minute, but the actual position of every single beat (as well as other rhythmically relevant points).
  • has a very powerful and intuitive interface to visualize and select individual beats

Beat Assistant for After Effects

  • is compatible with all After Effects versions since CS4, while BeatEdit for Premiere is only compatible with CC 2014 and CC 2015
  • can also generate keyframes and stagger layers

So, if you use an old version of After Effects (or if it’s very important for you to generate keyframes or stagger layers), Beat Assistant for After Effects might be your best choice. But in most cases, BeatEdit for Premiere Pro will be a much better, more robust, accurate and flexible solution.
