License Type FAQ

Oct 24, 2024 by aescripts

Single User License

If you are an individual user you should consider the Single User License (SUL). The SUL license allows for the software to be installed on up to two user accounts/computers as long as they are not being used at the same time. If you need to install it on more than two user accounts or computers you will need to purchase additional SUL licenses or consider the Floating licenses.

It is also possible to order multiple-user single user licenses. Simply change the quantity on the license for the number of users needs whe. placing the order. A single multi-user license code will be issued that all users can use and can be managed from the account at the license was purchased in.

Floating Server License

Floating licenses are dynamic and can be installed on as many computers as necessary as long as they are all on the same network but can also only be used by one user per license at a time.  They also require you to run our Floating License Server on your network to activate them, this means that if you are working remotely you would need to be able to VPN into your network to use the license.

Read more about floating licenses in the Floating License FAQ. If you have questions or issues with a license you already own, please see our License Code FAQ

Render Only License

Render Only License is a license that can only be used for rendering on the command line, you must own at least one Single User or Floating license to use this license. Every render-node needs to have its own license. This license type is also requires the Floating License Server to license the render node.

License Administration for Groups

If you are looking to manage licenses for a team or group, this offers additional explanations:

Floating licenses are dynamically assigned so the user would never need to know or see the license. The licenses automatically return to the server when they are no longer being used. If you are interested in floating licenses we offer a free trial for the server you can use to test on your network before purchase.

Single User Licenses can work two ways:

  • The default is that you enter the number of users you need in the QTY box when placing the order and you will receive a single multi-user license code in your account. In this account, you will be able to manage the license activations. These licenses differ from floating in that you will need to give the license code to the user for them to enter it themselves into the extension to license it and won't be released until the user or you deactivate it. Single User Licenses require you to have the same number of licenses for the number of users. So for example, 3 users would require a 3-user license.
  • You can place a corporate order and request separate individual licenses that you would then give to each individual user. The license would be in that user's account and only they would be able to access/activate/deactivate it.

The "Single User License" allows for the software to be installed on up to two computers that belong to you as long as they are not being used at the same time. If you need to install it on more than two computers or use them at the same time you will need additional licenses.

Please note that because they are perpetual licenses, they cannot be re-issued so you would need to trust the user you give the license code to. If this is an issue, you should use floating licenses.

The "Floating Server License" can be installed on as many computers as you'd like but it must be used in conjunction with our Floating License Server (https://aescripts.com/floating-license-server/) and can also only be used by one user at a time so you will need enough licenses to match your users.
Please see the Floating License FAQ for further details: https://aescripts.com/knowledgebase/index/view/faq/floating-license-faq/

The licenses described above can be placed directly on the site but please also see this faq on how to place a reseller or corporate order.
